The sequence begins with the cleaning lady and ends with a newspaper seller who leaves the cabin of the elevator in a hurry. In between we see editors, proofreaders, printers, secretaries and visitors coming and going, each accompanied by a humorous caption. This 'film' is a vehicle to show the diversity of work at the publishing house with people always portrayed in the same elevator situation. This is perfectly realised with the film-like juxtaposition of high format photos.
You would't normally associate the cheerful serenity in connection with this conservative publishing house! The photographers who provided the photos for the book are named, but not attributable to the pictures. Unfortunately, there's no name for who arranged the design & layout.
The book is not dated, but appeared in 1957 in two versions; with transparent protective jacket, on which the title is printed in red, and without a jacket. Here the title is printed directly on the cover.
The Springer book anticipated another series in 1969, made by the well known photographer Heinrich Riebesehl, in the elevator of a newspaper publishing house in Hannover. The photos are shown in three small exhibition catalogs that appeared in 1970 and 1971. They belong to the gems found in the history of German conceptual documentary photography. For the masterpiece, the leporello from 1971, even the vertical arrangement of the elevator images was taken on!
