The cover picture of a powerful rain singer at the Nöldnerplatz in Berlin, taken from the window of his apartment in 1970, is one of the most famous of Christian Borchert's photographs. It has given him the reputation of a "silent poet", but his special achievement within East German photography lies in a different area. Borchert understood himself primarily as a documentarist, and endeavoured to avoid any subjective distortion. "The artistic principle of a documentary photographer", he said, "to devote himself entirely to the subject, to leave behind his work calmly," something that can not be the original itself, but a just and accurate approximation, "without exaggeration and effects ".
