The Year Book was published for just five years by Colin Osman, publisher of Creative Camera and edited by Peter Turner. The intention was to produce a more permanent reference work as well as allowing larger portfolios than were possible in the monthly magazine.
Osman and Turner won the Grand Prix at Arles for their black-and-white 1975 volume. It set the format for the following four. Colour was never used. Critical acclaim greeted each volume. With the passage of years the editor's choices seem remarkably prescient.
The major portfolios are treasures and some of the Young Contemporaries have done rather well, such as Martin Parr and Chris Killip. Other notable portfolios include David Goldblatt, Raymond Moore, Bruce Gilden and Marketa Luskacova.
